When we observe improvement of visual functioning, we perform assessment with LH tests. If the child can do saccades, the grating acuity test and low contrast "Heiding Heidi" test can be done. When the child passes those tests and has adequate development level he/she can start playing with a 3-D puzzle. He/she learns to recognize shapes what will enable to perform him/her Lea Symbols tests. Next step would be assessment of visual acuity based upon recognizing symbols.
CASE STUDY
A 4-months old infant was admitted to the Early Intervention Group. His mother had not observed any visual reaction till that moment. He had roving eye movements. Retinal dysplasia was diagnosed during ophtalmoscopy. It was confirmed in clinical evaluation. In functional assessment he was trying to fixate on the biggest LH face palette, with +4,0 glasses. For next following months he had visual training based on the principles mentioned earlier. After one year of visual therapy he is a very well functioning boy with grating visual acuity 4.0 cpcm in better eye, with reaction on 10% low contrast face. Currently he's practicing recognizing shapes for future visual acuity assessment with optotypes
